Creative Arts Industries Commission announces grant awards

The Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (CAIC) has awarded grants to five Kansas arts organizations totaling $32,606. Grantees were selected by the CAIC’s advisory board and approved by Commerce Secretary Pat George through an application and review process.

The CAIC’s mission is to support the creative industries sector of the Kansas economy. The advisory board is dedicated to measuring, promoting, supporting and expanding the creative industries to grow the state’s economy and generate creative industry-related jobs. The CAIC announced its first round of grants in July 2013, awarding eight organizations a total of $58,400. The grants announced today are the first awarded in Fiscal Year 2014.

The grant recipients are:

De Soto Arts Council, De Soto, $4,842
The De Soto Arts Council will use the grant to develop an arts center in allocated space in the De Soto City Hall’s lower level. This dedicated space will serve as a home base for the De Soto Arts Council and be used for art classes, workshops, a gallery space and meetings. A permanent space will allow the council to continue to develop as an arts organization as it seeks to enlarge and energize the arts in its home community and the surrounding areas of Eudora, Bonner Springs and western Shawnee.

Douglas Design District, Wichita, $7,764
The Douglas Design District plans to use the grant to commission and install a series of 96 square-foot outdoor murals in four key locations through the area. These mural panels will be completed in a studio, professionally installed, displayed for a year, removed, sold at auction and then replaced with new art by a different professional artist or group selected by the District. Proceeds from the sale of the mural pieces will provide seed money to build a continuous source of funding to commission new works of art in the district on a regular basis.

Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, $5,000
The Performing Arts Series Arts Education Program will use the grant to further develop K-12 teacher training in arts integration to support STEM curriculum and English Learning Arts in Kansas public school district classrooms. During five workshops, the program will bring an estimated 300 teachers to Johnson County Community College to study arts integration in public school curriculum and in public school classrooms. The project, a pilot study of work force training for educators, will encourage, collect and analyze teacher feedback.

Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, $10,000
The Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art will enhance the visual and participatory experience of those who visit the Epsten Gallery at Village Shalom to see exhibitions and participate in ARTicipation art therapy based activities. The grant will also be used to increase the efficiency of office workspace for staff. Required improvements include upgrades to gallery space and facility and technical renovations to office space.

Rock Cottage Glassworks, Shawnee, $5,000
Rock Cottage Glassworks will use the grant to replace existing furnaces and tools to continue to provide quality, American made glass. Formed in 1991 to produce art glass, the company currently employs three Kansas residents to create custom lighting products for individuals and businesses.
